Tailored material selection for individual requirements

Tailored material selection for individual requirements

Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPE-U or TPU) can be used in a wide range of applications due to their huge variety of properties.

In order to realize desired material requirements, TPUs can be assembled similar to a modular principle. In this way, they can be selected precisely for the requirements of the intended application.

TPE-Us contain a hard and a soft segment. Due to this structure, it is possible to combine the different properties of these two segments. Each of these basic chemical structures has different useful properties.

In general, the hard segment is aromatic or aliphatic. The soft segment can be based on an ester, an ether or a copolymer, resulting in the following common combinations.

  • ARES: AROMATIC ESTER e.g. Pearlthane MAXI 12T85E, Example Property: Good adhesion to other materials
  • ALES: ALIPHATIC ESTER e.g. Pearlthane 91T85, Example Property: Good adhesion to other materials and yellowing resistant
  • ARET: AROMATIC ETHER e.g. ESTANE 58887, Example Property: Hydrolysis and microbial resistant
  • ALET: ALIPHATIC ETHER e.g. ESTANE 96F85 EXP, Example Property: Hydrolysis and microbial resistant as well as yellowing resistant
  • AREE: AROMATIC COPOLYMER, ETHER ESTER e.g. Pearlthane CLEAR 15N70, Example Property: Good mechanical properties
  • ALEE: ALIPHATIC COPOLYMER, ETHER ESTER, Example Property: Good mechanical properties and yellowing resistant

Using masterbatches and compounds, material properties of TPUs can be adapted even more precisely to the individual requirements of our customers.
